What Industries Benefit the Most From Hiring an SEO Company?

4 min read

In First Page Sage’s data from its own clients’ campaigns, SEO paid back most in real estate (1,389% average three-year ROI), medical devices (1,183%) and PCB design and manufacturing (1,101%), and least in e-commerce (317%). Break-even took between 5 months (construction) and 14 months (legal services) across the 19 industries it lists. Those averages describe one agency’s clients, not every business in each industry, so forecast from your own numbers.

The Industry Table

Industry Average three-year ROI Months to break even
Real Estate 1,389% 10
Medical Device 1,183% 13
PCB Design and Manufacturing 1,101% 11
Financial Services 1,031% 9
Higher Education and College 994% 13
Oil and Gas 906% 10
Industrial IoT 866% 7
Pharmaceutical 826% 9
Manufacturing 813% 9
Biotech 788% 8
Solar Energy 770% 9
Commercial Insurance 758% 9
Addiction Treatment 736% 8
B2B SaaS 702% 7
Construction 681% 5
HVAC Services 678% 6
IT Staffing 612% 10
Legal Services 526% 14
eCommerce 317% 9

The figures come from First Page Sage’s SEO ROI report (last updated September 25, 2025). Four points about the method matter before you use them:

  • They are averages over three years from First Page Sage’s own campaigns between Q1 2021 and Q3 2025, which it describes as thought-leadership programs for which clients pay the agency about $120,000 a year.
  • ROI is calculated as net profit from the campaign divided by campaign cost, times 100.
  • Break-even is the number of months until net revenue from the campaign exceeds what was spent on it.
  • The type of work matters as much as the industry: the same report puts basic content marketing at 16% ROI with a 15-month break-even, against 748% and 9 months for its thought-leadership programs.

What the Top of the Table Has in Common

Our reading of the table: the top industries sell high-value products or services, buyers research for a long time, and the decision depends on trust. One organic lead brings far more revenue when a sale is $40,000 than when it is $15. The pattern has exceptions. Oil and gas and PCB manufacturing rank high, while B2B SaaS, with its long research cycles, sits in the middle at 702%. First Page Sage does not explain the differences itself.

Why a Lower Percentage Can Still Be a Good Buy

Legal services sits near the bottom at 526%, with the longest break-even among the industries listed, 14 months. A 526% return over three years is still a strong one. First Page Sage’s separate SEO-versus-PPC conversion data (last updated August 7, 2025, from 124 clients between August 2022 and July 2024, skewed toward B2B) also puts legal services at 4.4% conversion from organic search against 2.2% from paid search.

That conversion advantage is not universal. In the same data, construction converts at 1.9% from both channels, and higher education converts better from paid search (1.7%) than from organic (1.4%). Compare the channels on your own numbers before assuming organic wins.

E-commerce and the 317% Figure

E-commerce has the lowest ROI in the table. First Page Sage does not explain why; a likely factor is that product searches put store pages up against marketplaces and paid shopping ads for the same clicks. A lower percentage does not make SEO a poor investment for a store, but it does mean a flatter payoff; we would weight a store’s plan toward category pages and product data over blog content.

Local Service Businesses

HVAC services shows a 678% ROI with a 6-month break-even, one of the fastest in the table, and the SEO-versus-PPC data puts HVAC at 3.3% conversion from organic search against 1.8% from paid. The data has no separate row for plumbing or other trades. For a business that serves a defined area, the core work is local: the Business Profile, reviews and location pages, which the role an SEO company plays in local SEO explains.

B2B SaaS

B2B SaaS shows a 702% ROI with a 7-month break-even, and First Page Sage’s conversion data puts it at 2.1% from organic search against 1.0% from paid. Buyers can compare vendors over weeks or months, so comparison pages, integration guides and use-case content can meet them at several points in that research.

Healthcare Practices

First Page Sage tracks healthcare by patient acquisition cost instead of ROI. Its patient acquisition cost data (last updated September 21, 2026, from an anonymized database covering 2021 to 2026) puts the average cost per patient at $218 from organic search against $346 from paid search, about 37% lower by simple arithmetic. The page notes that some of its figures come from a limited number of practices. Medical content carries accuracy and compliance requirements that not every agency handles; whether your practice needs a specialist is weighed in which industries require a niche SEO company.

When SEO Is a Weak Bet

SEO is a poor fit when few people search for what you sell, or when marketplaces and aggregators own the results for your core queries. It is also unlikely to be the main channel when you need revenue within the next few months, especially on a new site in a competitive market. The break-even months above are one agency’s averages, not a minimum wait, so weigh paid search, partnerships or direct sales against your own timeline.

Budgeting With These Figures

Read the break-even month for your industry as one agency’s average, not as a waiting period that applies to you; the table reflects programs in which clients paid the agency about $120,000 a year. Ask any agency to model ROI with your own average customer value, margin, close rate and current organic traffic before you sign; a proposal that quotes an industry average as your expected return is quoting someone else’s campaigns. Map spend levels to scope with the typical pricing model of an SEO company.
