What Makes One SEO Company Better Than Another?
Service lists from SEO companies can look alike, so the difference shows up in eight things you can check: specialists do the technical work, strategy has visibly changed since AI Overviews, reports count leads or revenue, content differs from client to client, you know who does the work, ranking drops get diagnosed, case studies can be verified, and the company understands your industry’s constraints. Each section below gives the test.
Technical Specialists, Not Only Account Managers
There is a gap between someone who can talk about SEO in a sales call and a team that can read crawl data, diagnose a JavaScript rendering problem or explain why a migration lost traffic. Test it with one specific question about a problem sites like yours face.
What separates the answers: for a faceted navigation problem on an online store, a specific answer names which parameter combinations the team would block or canonicalize and how it would confirm, in Search Console’s Crawl Stats report or in server logs, that Googlebot stopped spending requests on them. A generic answer says the team would “optimize crawl budget.”
Strategy That Has Changed Since AI Overviews
AI Overviews and other AI features have changed the value of a click from Google; the click studies, with their limits, are laid out in the strategies an SEO company uses to improve search rankings.
Mentioning AI search in a pitch proves nothing. Ask for one client whose keyword targets or content priorities changed after AI Overviews appeared for its queries, what changed, and what happened next. An agency with no concrete example has not shown that it adapted, whatever the slide says.
Reports That Count Leads or Revenue
A stronger agency sets up conversion tracking from the start, so a report can say how many qualified leads organic search produced, not only that rankings rose. Ask whether the agency will report against a lead or revenue number you agree on before the contract starts; its answer shows how it expects to be judged.
Not every measurement upgrade pays for itself at every size. A single-location business with one marketing channel may need only call and form tracking, not CRM integration, and an enterprise reporting setup is easier to justify once leads move through a sales team.
Content That Is Not Interchangeable
Templated content shows: the same headings, the same generic tips and the same surface treatment for every client in an industry. An agency that stands apart brings in original data, named examples and input from the client’s own experts. Test it by reading two or three pieces the agency published for different clients in the same industry. If they read like one article with the names swapped, expect the same for yours.
Knowing Who Does the Work
An agency may use in-house staff for everything, or subcontract writing, outreach or technical work to freelancers or overseas vendors. Subcontracting is not automatically a problem, but it can affect how fast quality problems get fixed. Ask who specifically will work on your account and whether that team is in-house or contracted.
How They Respond When Rankings Drop
A campaign can hit a ranking drop at any stage; what separates agencies is what they do next. A strong agency flags the drop, investigates the likely cause and explains what it will change. A weak one goes quiet, blames the algorithm without analysis, or keeps running the same plan. Because this is hard to judge before signing, ask a current client how the agency responded the last time something went wrong.
Case Studies You Can Verify
Case studies are easy to dress up, so check each one against three tests:
- It names the client, or gives a documented reason it cannot, such as an NDA.
- It links to the client’s site or to a result you can check.
- It covers a defined period with a clear starting point.
Exact session and lead counts attributed to an unnamed “Client A” with no way to check them are marketing, not evidence. Search for the named client yourself and look for the result on the client’s side: a testimonial, a case study on its own site, or a public post.
Retention Numbers With Context
Ask what share of clients are still active after 12 months and how the agency counts it: which clients enter the count, whether retainer and project clients are reported separately, and over what period. The published churn figures we could trace give no sample or method, so judge the answer by its counting method rather than against an industry average. A high retention figure with no method behind it tells you little.
Fit With Your Industry
“Better” is partly relative. An agency with deep e-commerce technical experience is not automatically the right choice for a regulated healthcare practice. To decide whether your industry needs a specialist, and to test a specialist’s claim, use which industries require a niche SEO company.
Comparing Two Finalists
Give both the same four requests: answer one technical question about your own site, show one client whose strategy changed after AI Overviews, show a sample report that counts leads or revenue, and name the people who will do the work. Choose the one whose answers you can verify. Before that stage, use the questions to ask before hiring an SEO company to narrow the list, and check the trust basics, from open methods to realistic forecasts, in what makes a trustworthy SEO company; on a small budget, how to choose an SEO company for a small business sets out what to deprioritize.
