How Does an SEO Company Optimize Content for Search Engines?

5 min read

Google’s guidance on AI features says “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode,” so an SEO company optimizes content for search results and AI answers with the same work. It matches the intent and format of the pages already ranking, puts a direct answer under each heading, adds first-hand detail and cited sources, refreshes pages that have lost ground, and tracks results by query.

Which Pages to Optimize First

Start with pages that already have demand. We filter Search Console’s Performance report for pages with many impressions that sit between roughly positions 4 and 20 for queries that matter to the business. They are close enough to move, and the report shows which queries to write for. Pages that lost clicks over the last six to twelve months come next, because something in the results or in the page has changed.

Match the Intent and Format Already Ranking

Before anyone writes, the agency reads the current results for the target query. A search for “best CRM for small business” could come from someone learning the category or someone close to buying. If the top 10 results are all comparison lists, a single-product sales page is unlikely to rank, however well it is written, because it does not match the format Google is showing for that query. The output of this step is a gap list: subtopics, questions, data and examples the ranking pages cover and yours does not.

Put a Direct Answer Under Each Heading

A section that states its answer first can be easier for readers, for featured snippets and for AI answers to use. Our working rule, not a Google requirement, is a short self-contained answer right after each heading, with the explanation after it. Google’s featured snippets documentation offers no markup to request a snippet; it explains only how to opt out, with the nosnippet rule or the data-nosnippet attribute.

Featured snippets have shrunk while AI answers have grown, and the figures are dated:

  • Ahrefs’ study of 1 million random U.S. desktop results (July 22, 2025) found featured snippets on 5.53% of results in June 2025, down from 15.41% in January. Ahrefs reports a 0.9 correlation with the growth of AI Overviews, adding that correlation is not causation.
  • First Page Sage’s 2026 CTR report (last updated September 22, 2026), built from its own client data and a weekly results crawl, puts an AI answer (an AI Overview or an AI Mode response) on 81.6% of U.S. queries and above 94% of informational and commercial-research queries. It also reports that the click-through rate on citations inside AI answers roughly quadrupled between December 2025 and August 2026.

Google’s AI features documentation adds a detail that shapes structure: AI Overviews and AI Mode “may use a ‘query fan-out’ technique”, issuing related searches across subtopics. A page that answers the subtopics a buyer asks about, each under its own heading, gives those searches something to find. To see how often your pages appear in those features, Search Console’s Generative AI performance report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode for each page.

Readability Without Losing Substance

Short sentences and clear breaks make a page easier to read; they do not require cutting the specifics that show expertise. An editing pass can flag overlong sentences with a tool such as the Hemingway App, then check that the cuts kept the facts. Use lists for separate items, tables for comparisons, and bold sparingly.

First-Hand Detail and Cited Sources

Google’s guidance on creating helpful, reliable content describes experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust as the qualities its systems look for, with trust the most important. In practice that means a named author with relevant experience, details only someone who did the work would know, and citations to primary sources rather than to other articles that cite no one. Google applies that standard with extra weight on health, money and safety topics, so on those pages we recommend review by someone with checkable credentials.

Keep Pages Current

Freshness can matter for AI citations. Seer Interactive’s study of content recency (June 25, 2025), covering more than 5,000 cited URLs, found that about 85% of AI Overview citations came from content published between 2023 and 2025, and roughly 44% from 2025 itself. That describes the age of the pages cited; it does not show that updating a page earns citations.

For each page that has lost traffic, the agency decides: refresh it with current data and the coverage competitors added, merge it into a stronger page that targets the same intent, or remove and redirect it. Updating the publish date without changing the content does not count as a refresh. How often to run this review, and how many pages to refresh each month, belongs to the content plan in the content strategies an SEO company recommends for long-term growth.

Structured Data That Matches the Page

Choose a schema type only when it describes what the page is: Article for editorial content, Product for an item for sale, LocalBusiness for a location. Markup that claims content the page does not show is a policy problem: Google’s structured data guidelines describe a structured data manual action that removes a page’s eligibility for rich results. For schema types, validation and the end of FAQ rich results, see how an SEO company improves a website’s on-page SEO.

Clusters at the Page Level

Inside a topic cluster, each article covers one subtopic the pillar page only summarizes, links to the pillar with a descriptive anchor, and does not target the pillar’s main query. The role an SEO company plays in content marketing explains who plans those clusters in a content program.

Proof an Agency Can Optimize Your Pages

Before you hire, ask to see the work and its timetable: before-and-after query data from Search Console for one page the agency has already optimized, the gap list it would build for one of your pages against the current top results, and the date it will report results, agreed before the change is published (we suggest 60 to 90 days). If it can show only a content score from a tool, you have not seen the work.
